Frequently Asked Questions

About Bare Products

What makes Bare different?

Bare Candle Company creates candles that are vegan friendly, cruelty-free, paraffin-free, phthalate free. We only use 100% soy wax from soybeans that was grown in the USA. We strive to keep candles simple, with natural ingredients.

What is a soy candle?

Soy candles are made from soy wax. Soy wax is created from the oil of a soybean. The majority of USA soy beans are grown in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. Bare Candle Company only used 100% soy wax from soybeans grown in the United States.

What is the difference between a 100% soy candle and a pure soy candle?

Label and marketing laws in the USA allow sellers to market their candles as “pure soy” if the candle contains at least 51% soy wax. What is the other 49%? It could be paraffin, beeswax, or coconut wax. Most “pure soy” sellers use paraffin because of its cheaper pricing. At Bare, we only use 100% soy wax grown in the USA.

What are the benefits of soy?

+ Natural: Soy wax is made from soybeans. Our 100% soy wax is grown in the USA.

+ Cleaner Burn: Soy wax non-toxic, unlike its petroleum-based competitor, paraffin wax. Soy wax also gives off substantially less soot (the black smokey substance that comes from burning a candle). Candle users often report of headaches while burning paraffin candles (due to the toxins within the candle).

+ Longer Burn: 100% soy candles last longer than a paraffin candle of the same size. Soy wax is denser; this means it takes more heat to melt the wax, meaning that the candle takes longer to burn through.

+ Environmentally Friendly: 100% soy wax is biodegradable!

+ Better Scent: Candle scent is given off when the wax is melted. Since a soy wax candle takes longer to burn, the scent is gradually released. There is not an instant, overpowering scent. Most people prefer the gradual released scent to the instantly strong scent.

What is a Phthalate, and why are they bad?

Phthalate is a chemical used in cheap fragrance oils. You can not smell or taste them, which makes them unnoticeable in items such as candles. There has been little research on phthalates. Current research shows it may cause cancer and affect human reproduction or development. Some research says not all phthalates are bad, but we choose to avoid phthalates altogether.

Why are your candles all white?

Our candles are all white because we add no color additives. Additional colors take away from the simple and natural look of the candle. Our soy wax candles are naturally white when they harden.

What are your wicks made of?

Our wicks are made of cotton. They are coated in a vegetable wax to provide rigidity during production. These wicks are vegan friendly, and cruelty free.

When should I trim the wick?

You should trim the wick before each burn. Trim the wick to ¼ to a ½ inch. Too small of a trim could cause a smaller melt pool, and too large of a trim could burn through your candle faster. Too large of a trim could also cause your candle to “dance”. If this happens, blow out the candle, trim the wick to proper size, and relight.

What are the burn times of your candles?

Mini Jar: 20-30 hours

Standard Jar: 40-50 hours

*This burn time is an estimate. Actual burn time varies by geographical location, temperature, location of burn (within a building, ie. Drafts, room temperature), altitude, and other factors.

Can I recycle my jar once I finish burning my candle?

Of course! Use the jar to make a new candle, pot a plant, wax melt holder, pen or pencil holder. We would love to see photos of your recycled jars. Tag us on Instagram @barecandlecompany

What are your labels made of?

Even our labels are Eco-friendly! No trees are harmed in the making of our labels. The labels on our candles have a soft texture, even though they are made of stone! Yes, labels can be made out of stone. Unlike traditional labels, our labels are 70% biodegradable compared to zero percent.
